 Does Career Connection Learning Matter? Well, you already know the answer to this. If not, obviously we wouldn't be sharing and the Transition Tidbits would be obsolete. With that said how much does it matter. The article below shares some great stats to show just how important career-connected learning is. For instance, 47% of High School Students surveyed said these types of activities made them aware of a job they did not know existed. Another 60% of respondents said activities such as internships and externships helped them with their post-school plans. So what activities are we talking about? Some examples from the article are; studying careers during a class, taking a field trip, doing a mock interview, and even attending a career fair. The answer is probably not a lot, and we are all probably guilty of doing it. The question then becomes if we do not show students that Transition is integrated and not a stand-alone activity, then they probably will never make that connection for themselves. This video and resources from NTACT and Transition Coalition demonstrate the Go 4 It Now Writing Strategy. This strategy uses the letters in Go 4 It Now as a mnemonic to frame students writing. This strategy can be taught as a IEP goal or as a Transition activity. From there this can be the same strategy the student uses no matter if they are writing about transition, in their ELA class, or even on the state assessment. It is tough to maybe see their children struggle in new settings and with new tasks and they may feel it is better to not have them move into the world of work. This fact sheet does a great job of showing the benefits for students entering the world of work. It discusses how work can help with both physical and mental health. There are also benefits as the student can become a stronger self-advocate for themselves. The fact sheet also talks about the social benefits of working.
