- Sometimes it might be difficult for families to see their children grow up and move into the world of work. It is tough to maybe see their children struggle in new settings and with new tasks and they may feel it is better to not have them move into the world of work. This fact sheet does a great job of showing the benefits for students entering the world of work. It discusses how work can help with both physical and mental health. There are also benefits as the student can become a stronger self-advocate for themselves. The fact sheet also talks about the social benefits of working. This fact sheet can be paired with other resources around supportive decision-making in order to help families see the benefits of work and also that is ok to support the student's struggle to improve their overall outcomes.
- These are 2 great tools from Ohio Means Jobs (OMJ) to help build a student's self-determination. It is each to know how much someone will make. You just take their hourly wage and multiply it by the number of hours they work. However, how much does someone need to make in order to have the lifestyle they want. This tool can help. For the Lifestyle Calculator, students go in and have 12 categories they will make choices from. They range from housing, transportation, entertainment, savings, and many more. In each category, there are a range of options from least to most expensive. Students then make the selection that best fits their preferences. After all the selections are made, students are given the needed salary and hourly wage they will need to make in order to live the lifestyle they chose. The budget calculator works in much the same way except students are typing in the actual prices. This can be a way to push our students a little more by making them research prices and enter them as opposed to the lifestyle calculator that already has prices populated.
- Looking for a way to expose your students to a lot of jobs really quickly. Maybe even a quick bell ringer or a video to get your lesson going. This YouTube channel is a great resource for you. This link has almost 30 videos that are at most a couple minutes in length. They give a really high-level overview of each of the jobs listed. Students can watch the brief videos to become more aware of different jobs that are available. Remember students need to move through the continuum of career awareness, career exploration, and career preparation. Students can use these videos to become aware and then move to the next stage and explore select jobs more in-depth. There are even some jobs listed that we may not think of, one example talks about AI jobs, which we know will continue to grow. These videos can be great tools for transition activities, you can teach your students how to compare and contrast jobs as your activity and use these videos as the tool to learn about each job.
