 Career Exploration

Remember the "Fluff Scale" we shared early this year from the University of Oklahoma's Zarrow Center.

According to this scale, as students get older our transition goals and activities should become more focused and have less "fluff" in them. Our resources this week are great tools to help students focus their career exploration more. For example, a student may be interested in the field of heavy machine operating but using the John Deere resource below they can focus on an actual position as well as a specific company thus moving from fluff to closer to a firm match.

  • John Deere has a dedicated section on their website for students and recent graduates. There is information on internships, part-time student programs, and their development program, and of course, you can search for jobs. There is also a section on tips for professionals. Visitors can also visit the professional careers link and learn more about not only jobs but also some benefits that come from working at John Deere. Teaching a student to compare all of this information with their PINS can help them move closer to a firm match on the fluff scale.
  • This site is full of great information that can help students eliminate the fluff in their career exploration. This website starts with an overview of each of the career fields available at the US Forest Service. Next, there is a section about benefits, pay, and work environment, which is great to use in order to match a student's PINS. The website also has a whole section dedicated to all of the opportunities they offer their students starting at the age of 16. Of course, you can also search all openings and it even has a feature that can allow you to search opportunities by using a map to help you see what is available where you want to live. Finally, they even have application tips and webinars to build the skills of potential applicants.
  • Home Depot has built a site that not only allows users to search for jobs but also builds their own pathways in the construction trades. Users are encouraged to build a profile that allows them to show off their skills, get noticed, and show their availability. Students can also learn more about specific areas in the field such as electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and HVAC. There is also information about why the trades are important as well as free training sessions.
  • One more great resource, this one from the Cleveland Clinic. If the link redirects you to a login page, just click login as guest. From there you will be on the resource home page. On the left, you will see a couple headings. The first are in-demand jobs at the Cleveland Clinic. Users can click on a job and get a video highlight of the job as well as more information about that specific job. In the center of the page you will see different sections for each of the webinars of Connected Career Rounds. They are based on a topic that aligns with specific occupations. For example, one focuses on vaping and connects this to; respiratory therapy and radiology technology. Here again, students will get the video spotlight and more information for each of these jobs.
